Research detail (your PhD studentship in)
Amorphous hydrogenated carbon films are attracting interest not
only because of their chemical inertness and mechanical hardness but
also because they luminescent at room temperature. This latter property
makes such films potential candidates for the active material in
electroluminescent devices. However before such devices can be made
it is necessary to reduce the defect density in the films in order
both to increase the luminescence efficiency and to permit doping of
the films. The purpose of this project is to use Magnetic Resonance
techniques to investigate the nature of the defects with a view to
reducing their population.
